Story of Tanu Chandra

18th July, morning, the staffs of Mission Ashra rescued a mentally ill destitute from Bhubaneswar railway station and named her Tanu. Her condition was indescribable, less bother of cloths and unconscious. By getting proper treatment, counseling and care at Mission ASHRA, Tanu improved day by day. She became conscious of her living, learned Oriya and started to recollect her past. She flash back her past, said ““I am Chandra from the village called Badagochhara in Sundargarh district of Orissa having two small children at home.” The MA team members tried to contact her home but no reply did letter correspondence. One team member visited her family and the family members were astonished to hear that Chandra is alive. Her son said, “ All were taking my mother dead but I knew she will return one day. I have the handkerchief given by her and I felt her sweet smell from it” and came to take her mother back. What a delighted moment was that for Tanu, her son and the team members, really a heart touching. A grand farewell as “A Ray of Hope” for Tanu was organized by people’s Forum. Many eminent personalities from the state were present over there to bless Tanu for her new life. There are many Tanu who have already reunited with their family by the effort of Mission Ashra.

Story of Nekhela

She was from Uttar Pradesh. She was just 18 years old and doing her graduation when she got married. She was spending gloomy days in her in-laws and it became nastiest when she gave birth to a dead child. She could not put up with this stun and slowly lost her mental stability. Her in-laws brought her to Puri and abandoned there only. The Ashra rescue team rescued her from the Bhubaneswar railway station on 17th July 2003 and named her Urbashi. That time she was suffering from acute TB and schizophrenia at an advance stage. She was not even able to walk properly. By getting treatment and care from the caretaker slowly she started recovering. After 10 months she became cured totally and recalls her past and gave her home address. Ashra did correspondence to her family and astonishingly her family members respond swiftly. Within 15 days they reached at Bhubaneswar to take their daughter back. It was a propitious day for the Ashra member when they gave a grand farewell to Nekehla.

Story of Shalu

Shalu was rescued on 19th August’03 from Jajpur by the ASHRA rescue team. Usually speaks Oriya and may be of 35 yrs. She was brought to ASHRA in a dirty condition, bad smell was coming out of her body and her hairs were not combed for days long. The caretaker caught her hair and made her bath. When she was given food, she had it as if she did not have it for several months. Shalu was very much aggressive and always shouting and repeating a common thing “Don’t kill me, my baby will cry”. Dr. Ratha diagnosed her as a chronic schizophrenia patient and prescribed medicines. Meanwhile one day she got a chance to have prasad of Lord Jagannath, that was brought from Puri. The day was happiest day for Shalu at ASHRA. Slowly Shalu started to recollect her past and remember her name as Bhagabati Das. After 6 months Shalu gave her home address. She belongs to a bramhin family residing in Cuttack. She is married and having a son. Somehow she was departed from her baby and because of it started to lost her mental balance. Correspondence was done to her family. On 25th April 04 was an auspicious day for Shalu as well as ASHRA members when her father Surendra Das and brother Bhagwan Das came to take Shalu back. The lime is un-forgettable for us when Shalu leave ASHRA with a new hope, which will give her colourful days with family especially with the baby. ASHRA takes regular follow up of its inmates and it is found that Shalu is spending her days happily.

Story of Champa

On 8th May’04 the ASHRA rescue team found Champa, a lady of near about 50, from Begunia Bus Stop. In the beginning she was not willing to wear cloths and always dancing in the position of different god and goddesses. She was suffering in manic excitement. She was having very good relationship with other inmates and spending her days in singing and dancing. After the treatment of 1 month she could recollect her past and got her memory back. Champa gave her home address to the ASHRA team and financially on 10th July her father, brother and husband reached at ASHRA. The moment is un-describable when Campa hug her father and brother. Now she is living happily with her husband

Story of Damayanti

Damayanti, a girl of early twenty was roaming in the side of N.H.-5. It was on 25th Feb’04. When she was found by ASHRA rescue team members. It was really hard for the ASHRA members to control Damayanti. She was much unconscious in her daily living. Dr. N.M. Ratha diagnosed her to be suffering from panic state and started treatment. Damayanti was shouting at night and disturbing others. She was afraid of darkness and most of the time feeling hungry. By getting proper treatment and care Damayanti recovered her memory on the month of May and told her home address. After a detail correspondence Damayanti ‘s father, uncle and brother came to ASHRA on 12th July’04. The reunion of Damayanti with her father is heart touching. The stream of tears was coming out of Damayanti’s eyes and she was telling her father “you have got me now so let’s live together”.

Story of Subhadra

The ASHRA rescue team got Subhadra on 28th July’03 from Puri. She was having a bundle of clothes with her while rescued. She was very aggressive and ASHRA team took the help of police to bring her. The caretaker named her Subhadra, may be of 30 years. During her staying at ASHRA Subhadra used to sing nicely. She was leading the prayer songs in daily evening and the inmates were following her. She was diagnosed as suffering from chronic mental stage. Her nature was to get irritate to others and scolding in bad words. After getting medicines Subhadra started to recover slowly. One day she gave her home address to the caretaker. Her youngest son came to meet Subadra. That day her joy was no bound. She asked her son “when your papa will come and take me back”. The next day only her husband came to take Subhadra with him. The day was 19th June and Subhadra wear new saree to meet her husband. That moment was really wonderful when a broken family reunite again to start their new life.

Story of Ambika

A woman in a dreadful condition, roaming on the road at Puri was rescued on 14th August’03. by the rescued team of ASHRA. While she was brought, it was hard to listen the word she was speaking. She was scolding everyone. The ASHRA members named her Ambika. It was observed that Ambika was very spiritual and always praying to god. Dr. Ratha diagnosed her as a patient of depression state. Medicines were provided to Ambika. In the month of November she started to flash back her earlier days and finally gave her home address. After a detail correspondence by ASHRA, her brother Kalia Mishra came to take Ambika on 7th Jan’04. The ASHRA members were happy to sent Ambika back to her family.

Story of Basanti

The ASHRA team members rescued Basanti on 17th July’03 from Tamando market. She was suffering from chronic psychosis problem. At ASHRA she never created problem. Helping the caretakers in cooking, clearing utensils and other works. After getting thorough treatment she told her family address. When ASHRA members contact with her family her parents strictly oppose. They said “Basanti is already got married and we can’t bring her back”. But it was god’s grace and Basanti’s luck that in a noontime her husband suddenly came to ASHRA and called out side the window where Basanti was sleeping. It was really amazing when Basanti recognized his voice and tears of happiness was falling out of her eyes. The moment when Basanti met her husband is really remarkable.

Story of Parvati

Parvati was rescued from Baghamari at 18th July by the team members of ASHRA. She was going through schizophrenia stage. Her actions were very aggressive at ASHRA. She was not conscious in her daily living. Always playing with dirty things. One thing was observed in her that she used to collect garbage from outside and keep with her. Parvati was out of control by the caretakers. After going through a detail checkup Parvati started to recollect her family life. In her home address ASHRA members contact her family. Her son came on 4.09.03 and took her mother back to their home. Now Parvati is leading a happy and normal life with her family members.
